First
Night Virginia now enters its 26th year, and I'm happy
to say that I join this fun, family event and hard-working
Board of Directors as the new Executive Director. Everyone
has graciously welcomed me.
This year we're "Celebrating the Commonwealth"
with a bounty of entertainment from Virginia. That's right
up my alley folks! I was born and raised here in Charlottesville.
I've watched my little town grow into a city filled with
wonder and opportunity. First Night is one of the events
that brings all of the magic together.
Look for family-friendly changes to our line-up this year.
The fireworks will begin at 8:45 pm. And visit the Downtown
Pavilion for moonbounces and vendors selling treats like
chocolates and homemade doughnuts. As always, we'll hold
Creation Station at the Omni and lead the Children's Processional
down the Mall to the "Bubble Wrap Stomp" in
the Central Place.
I would like to thank the FNV Board of Directors and all
of the volunteers, some that I haven't even met yet, for
your support in my first short months with you. You may
not know that there are only two part-time paid positions
at FNV, and the rest of the work is done by our invaluable
volunteers. If you have never been involved, then you're
missing out! These are special people doing special work.
There are opportunities all year long, not just at show-time,
and every hour spent is appreciated. Without you, there
would be no First Night Virginia.
I look forward to celebrating the New Year with you-here's
to a Great 2008!
